What Are The Symptoms Of Precocious Puberty In Children

2025-9-18

With the acceleration of modern life pace, the problem of precocious puberty has gradually attracted widespread attention from society. Premature puberty refers to the early development of sexual characteristics in children during their growth and development process, often leading to the appearance of secondary sexual characteristics at an earlier age. This phenomenon not only affects the physical and mental health of children, but may also have an impact on their future growth and development. Therefore, as parents, we need to closely monitor our children's growth and development, be alert to signs of precocious puberty, and take effective preventive measures.

1、 Precocious puberty and its symptoms

Precocious puberty is a puberty developmental disorder characterized by the appearance of secondary sexual characteristics in individuals at an early age. In China, the occurrence of secondary sexual characteristics in boys before the age of 9 and in girls before the age of 8 is defined as precocious puberty.

The secondary sexual characteristics of males mainly include tall stature, well-developed muscles, wide shoulders, strong physique, prominent Adam's apple, vigorous voice, and the appearance of thick beard. In contrast, women's secondary sexual characteristics are characterized by increased subcutaneous fat, tender skin, broad pelvis, developed mammary glands, and enlarged breasts, and may even experience menarche. Survey data shows that the proportion of women with precocious puberty is significantly higher than that of men.

According to the pathogenesis and clinical manifestations, precocious puberty can be divided into two types: central (gonadotropin-releasing hormone dependent) and peripheral (non gonadotropin-releasing hormone dependent). Central precocious puberty, also known as true precocious puberty, has a procedural process similar to normal puberty, including the activation and maturation of the hypothalamic pituitary gonadal axis, ultimately leading to the development and maturation of the reproductive system. Peripheral precocious puberty is caused by various reasons leading to an increase in sex steroid hormones in the body to puberty levels, manifested only as the early appearance of secondary sexual characteristics without a complete sexual development program.

Premature puberty is a condition of abnormal growth and development, and its typical symptoms vary in different genders and age groups. Generally speaking, in the pre adolescent stage, both boys and girls may experience rapid growth in height and weight, which may be related to long-term overnutrition or lead to obesity.

For girls, the symptoms of precocious puberty usually manifest as breast development, which may occur earlier than girls of the same age. Breasts may become fuller, and sometimes there may even be color changes in the nipples and areola. In addition, girls' external genitalia may also undergo changes, which may include the appearance of pubic hair and armpit hair. As sexual development progresses, some girls may experience menstrual periods earlier than normal age.

For boys, the symptoms of precocious puberty usually manifest as increased testicular volume, penile growth and thickening. Beards, pubic hair, and armpit hair may also appear earlier. The boy's voice may become low and some may even experience nocturnal emissions.

It is worth noting that the speed of symptom development for precocious puberty may vary. Some children may develop rapidly, while others may pause their development after a certain stage and continue to develop after a period of time. Some children may experience partial symptoms that disappear and then reappear after reaching a certain level of development.

Most children with precocious puberty do not have accompanying symptoms, but if it is caused by intracranial space occupying lesions, the child may experience symptoms such as headache, dizziness, and decreased vision. These symptoms may be related to increased intracranial pressure or other neurological problems, and require timely medical examination and treatment.

2、 The causes of precocious puberty

For peripheral precocious puberty, common causes include congenital adrenal hyperplasia, hypothyroidism, hormone secreting tumors, autonomic ovarian cysts, and exogenous hormone intake. These reasons may lead to the elevation of sex steroid hormones in the body to adolescent levels, triggering the early appearance of secondary sexual characteristics.

The common causes of central precocious puberty are even more diverse. On the one hand, some peripheral precocious puberty diseases may be secondary to central precocious puberty. On the other hand, congenital abnormalities of the central nervous system may also lead to precocious puberty, such as hypothalamic hamartoma, arachnoid cyst, neurofibromatosis type I, tuberous sclerosis, Chiari's malformation, and spinal cord protrusion. These abnormalities may lead to abnormal activation and maturation of the hypothalamic pituitary gonadal axis, which in turn can trigger precocious puberty.

In addition, acquired lesions of the central nervous system may also cause central precocious puberty. These lesions may include post-traumatic, granulomatous diseases, and tumors such as astrocytomas, ependymomas, pineal gland tumors, gliomas, craniopharyngiomas, germ cell tumors, and meningiomas. These tumors or other lesions may compress or affect the hypothalamic pituitary gonadal axis, leading to its abnormal activation and maturation, and subsequently causing central precocious puberty.

Finally, idiopathic central precocious puberty is also a common cause of central precocious puberty. The specific cause of this condition is not clear, but it may be due to self activation of the hypothalamic pituitary gonadal axis.

3、 How to prevent precocious puberty?

To prevent precocious puberty, parents can start with their children's lifestyle habits and help them establish a healthy lifestyle.

Maintaining a healthy weight is very important. Obesity is an important risk factor for precocious puberty, therefore, parents should pay attention to their children's dietary structure and avoid excessive intake of high calorie, high-fat fast food or fried foods. At the same time, encouraging children to participate in more exercise, such as running and skipping rope every day, can help control weight and prevent obesity.

2. Try to avoid exposing children to substances containing hormones. Hormonal substances in the environment, such as animal genitalia and legumes, may contain growth promoting agents or animal hormones, and excessive intake may induce precocious puberty in children. In addition, adult cosmetics or supplements may contain hormone components, which should also be avoided for children to come into contact with or consume.

3. In terms of lifestyle habits, children should develop the habit of sleeping on time and avoiding staying up late. Turning off lights and sleeping at night can produce melatonin in the dark, inhibit the release of gonadotropins, and prevent precocious puberty. In addition, avoiding children from being exposed to visual stimuli such as pornographic texts and movies too early can help prevent their early awakening of sexual awareness.

If a child is found to have symptoms of precocious puberty, such as premature breast development or early menstruation, medical attention should be sought promptly. Doctors can develop treatment plans based on the specific situation of children to ensure their healthy and normal growth.

Premature puberty is a complex issue that requires prevention and intervention from multiple aspects. Parents should pay attention to their children's weight, diet, lifestyle habits, etc., try to avoid their children's exposure to substances containing hormones, and develop good lifestyle habits. By establishing a healthy lifestyle and timely treatment, we can help children stay away from the troubles of precocious puberty and grow up healthy.
