The Hazards And Treatment Methods Of Snoring

2025-7-30

Snoring is a breathing accessory sound produced by the upper airway during sleep, usually occurring during inhalation, but can also occur during exhalation. Regardless of whether it is inhalation or exhalation, snoring is caused by the high-frequency opening and closing of the upper airway structure, including the tongue and soft palate, through the adhesion of mucosal secretions.

1、 The harm of snoring

1. Decreased sleep quality: Snoring patients usually wake up multiple times during sleep because breathing pauses can cause hypoxia and trigger the body's alarm response, which leads to a decrease in sleep quality. They often feel tired, sleepy, lack concentration during the day, and affect work and life.

2. Cardiovascular problems: Snoring is related to cardiovascular diseases. Long term hypoxia and repeated holding of breath can lead to elevated blood pressure and unstable heart rate. Snoring is also associated with coronary heart disease, angina pectoris, heart attacks, and other problems.

3. Hypoxemia: Snoring patients may experience respiratory pauses during sleep, which can lead to insufficient oxygen supply in the blood, resulting in hypoxemia. Long term hypoxemia has a negative impact on the function of organs such as the brain, heart, and liver.

4. Sleep apnea syndrome: Severe snoring may develop into sleep apnea syndrome, characterized by frequent pauses in breathing and respiratory obstruction, further exacerbating the harm to sleep quality and physical health, and increasing the risk of other diseases.

5. Psychological health issues: Long term sleep disrupted by snoring can lead to anxiety, depression, and emotional instability.

2、 Treatment methods for snoring

1. Weight loss: Obesity is a common cause of snoring, and weight loss can reduce fat accumulation around the respiratory tract, thereby improving respiratory patency.

2. Orthodontic appliance: This is a device similar to a dental brace that can move the lower jaw forward, increase the gap in the throat, and improve breathing. It is suitable for snoring caused by muscle relaxation in the throat.

3. Improve sleeping posture: Sleeping on the side can reduce obstruction of the tongue and soft palate, help improve breathing, establish good sleep habits, and ensure sufficient sleep time.

4. Surgical treatment:

(1) Laser surgery: Using laser technology to contract the relaxed soft palate and uvula, reducing respiratory obstruction. This treatment method is generally suitable for patients with mild to moderate snoring.

(2) Palatectomy and flat excision: Surgical removal or trimming of tissues in the throat to reduce airway obstruction. This treatment method is suitable for snoring caused by enlarged oropharynx.

(3) Tongue root reduction surgery: Through surgery, the volume of the tongue root is reduced to improve airway patency. This treatment method is suitable for snoring caused by enlarged tongue base.

(4) Nasal surgery: When there are nasal polyps, obvious nasal septum deviation, hypertrophy of the inferior turbinate, or other anatomical abnormalities, nasal surgery is often performed to improve snoring.

3、 Symptoms of snoring

1. Snoring: This is the most obvious symptom of snoring, usually occurring in a supine position due to vibrations caused by air passing through narrow airways.

2. Apnea: Severe snoring patients may experience apnea, which is a brief cessation of breathing during sleep, leading to hypoxia and rapid awakening, and sometimes even a feeling of suffocation.

3. Elevated blood pressure: Snoring patients often suffer from sleep apnea syndrome, which can cause a decrease in blood oxygen levels and hemodynamic disorders. Long term unstable blood pressure may increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension.

4. Fatigue: Due to limited nighttime breathing, snoring patients may not be able to achieve sufficient deep sleep, resulting in feeling tired, sleepy, and drowsy during the day.

To avoid the harm caused by snoring, it is necessary to improve the sleep environment, maintain good sleep habits, avoid overwork and stress, have a reasonable diet, and maintain a healthy lifestyle in daily life. At the same time, regular physical examinations can also help detect potential diseases early. If symptoms of snoring occur, it is recommended to seek medical attention promptly at a regular hospital and undergo relevant examinations and treatment.
