Key to Prevention and Management of Hypertension

2025-7-26

Hypertension, as a chronic disease, has become a global public health issue with its widespread and far-reaching impact. According to data from the World Health Organization, approximately 1 billion people worldwide suffer from hypertension, and this number is constantly increasing. Hypertension not only leads to serious health problems such as heart disease, stroke, and kidney disease, but also imposes a heavy economic burden on society and families. Therefore, the prevention and management of hypertension are particularly important. This article will start with the definition of hypertension, explore the risk factors of hypertension, and how to effectively prevent and manage it through lifestyle changes, medication treatment, and social support.

1、 The definition and risk factors of hypertension

Hypertension, also known as the "silent killer", refers to a state where systolic blood pressure (high pressure) is ≥ 140 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure (low pressure) is ≥ 90 mmHg in the absence of external stress. The formation of hypertension is the result of multiple factors, including genetic factors, age, gender, obesity, dietary habits, physical activity levels, alcohol and smoking habits, psychological stress, and socioeconomic status.

Genetic factors play an important role in the formation of hypertension, but postnatal lifestyle and environmental factors have a more direct and controllable impact on hypertension. Unhealthy dietary habits, such as high salt, high-fat, and high calorie eating patterns, are important causes of hypertension. In addition, lack of physical activity, excessive drinking and smoking, long-term psychological stress and anxiety all increase the risk of hypertension.

2、 Lifestyle changes

Preventing and managing hypertension, lifestyle changes are the most fundamental and effective method. Firstly, a reasonable diet is an important part of preventing hypertension. Reducing salt intake, increasing the proportion of vegetables and fruits, and controlling the intake of saturated fat and cholesterol can all help lower blood pressure. Secondly, regular physical activity can not only lower blood pressure, but also improve cardiovascular health, reduce weight, and thus lower the risk of hypertension. It is recommended that adults engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise or 75 minutes of high-intensity exercise per week. Again, limiting alcohol intake and quitting smoking are important measures to reduce the risk of hypertension. Finally, managing one's own psychological state, learning to relax and relieve stress, is equally important for preventing hypertension.

3、 The necessity of drug therapy

For patients who have developed hypertension, simple lifestyle changes often cannot achieve ideal blood pressure control effects, and drug therapy is needed in this case. At present, commonly used antihypertensive drugs in clinical practice include diuretics, beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs), and angiotensin receptor antagonists (ARBs). The selection of drugs should be personalized based on the specific situation of the patient, such as age, accompanying diseases, and side effects of the drug. In addition, patients should regularly monitor their blood pressure and adjust their medication dosage under the guidance of a doctor to ensure that blood pressure is controlled within the ideal range.

4、 Social support and hypertension management

Social support plays an indispensable role in the prevention and management of hypertension. The support and understanding of family members can help hypertensive patients better comply with treatment plans and lifestyle changes. Community and workplace health promotion activities can provide an environment conducive to the prevention of hypertension. The policies and projects of the government and non-governmental organizations, such as limiting salt content in food and providing exercise facilities in public places, also have a positive impact on the prevention and management of hypertension among the public.

In summary, the prevention and management of hypertension require comprehensive consideration of various factors such as individual lifestyle, medication treatment, and social support. By changing unhealthy lifestyle habits, using antihypertensive drugs reasonably, and with the support of society and families, we can effectively control and manage hypertension, reducing its burden on individuals and society. In the future, we need to further strengthen the popularization of hypertension knowledge among the public, enhance awareness of hypertension prevention, and establish a hypertension prevention and control system with the participation of the whole society, in order to achieve the goal of reducing the incidence of hypertension and related complications.
