Knowledge Related To Labor Analgesia And Anesthesia

2025-8-16

Labor pain is a natural physiological response during childbirth, and for a long time, people have regarded this intense and painful process as an inevitable and normal process. Whether childbirth is painful or not reflects the level of civilization in a society, and reducing the pain of mothers is a respect for life. Labor analgesia usually requires the use of anesthesia to achieve its goals, and the active participation of anesthesiologists is an important part of ensuring the quality of labor analgesia. It can alleviate pain during childbirth, and popularizing knowledge of labor analgesia has important social significance. However, some people are concerned that childbirth analgesia and anesthesia may lead to intellectual decline or dumbness. This article aims to popularize the impact of childbirth analgesia and anesthesia on intelligence, in order to provide accurate information to those who are concerned about this issue.

1、 What is labor analgesia?

Labor analgesia is a medical method used to alleviate or eliminate pain during childbirth. It aims to provide a more comfortable experience during childbirth, reduce pain during delivery, improve the success rate of vaginal delivery, reduce non-medical indications for cesarean section, and minimize maternal related complications. There are many methods for labor analgesia, such as spinal nerve block, intravenous labor analgesia, inhalation of laughing gas, pudendal nerve block, water delivery, guided delivery, analgesic devices, etc. Among them, spinal nerve block has the most practical and reliable effect, providing the best analgesic effect, with minimal impact on mother and baby, and active cooperation of postpartum women. Therefore, it is currently the safest, most effective and reliable analgesic method, mainly including the following:

1. Continuous epidural labor analgesia: placing an epidural catheter in lumbar puncture can provide continuous analgesia until the end of delivery. When cesarean section surgery is needed, epidural anesthesia can be used to complete the surgery and postoperative analgesia.

2. Lumbar epidural combined labor analgesia: Combining the advantages of subarachnoid block and epidural block, it has fast onset and good analgesia. When the time for subarachnoid block has passed and the patient feels pain, low concentration local anesthetics can be continuously injected from the epidural space for analgesia, which can also meet the requirements of emergency cesarean section surgery.

3. Single subarachnoid injection for labor analgesia: The administration of opioids combined with low-dose local anesthetics in the subarachnoid space is suitable for emergency labor with a history of vaginal delivery due to limited analgesic time.

4. Continuous subarachnoid block for labor analgesia: A method of inserting a microcatheter into the subarachnoid space and intermittently or continuously injecting local anesthetics or analgesics to produce and maintain spinal anesthesia and analgesia. Compared with the above methods, it has the advantages of small medication dosage, complete analgesia, precise effect, and minimal hemodynamic impact. Due to the need for special catheters, this method has not yet been widely adopted.

When there are contraindications for intraspinal nerve block in postpartum women, intravenous labor analgesia can be used as an alternative method, but its effectiveness is not as good as intraspinal labor analgesia.

2、 The benefits of labor analgesia

2.1 Reducing pain

Labor is a difficult task accompanied by intense pain. Labor analgesia can significantly reduce the pain experienced by postpartum women during childbirth, making them more comfortable.

2.2 Reducing Anxiety

Pain during childbirth can cause maternal anxiety and unease. To help mothers better cope with the psychological challenges of childbirth, we can alleviate pain through labor analgesia. This can make it easier for mothers to cope with pain during childbirth, thereby reducing the occurrence of anxiety and unease.

2.3 Improving maternal cooperation

Reducing pain is crucial for mothers to cooperate more easily during childbirth. Pain can cause tension and discomfort, making it difficult for the mother to focus and cooperate with the guidance of the medical team. By using appropriate pain relief methods, such as medication free pain relief techniques, drug analgesia, or anesthesia, it can help mothers alleviate pain, improve their comfort and willingness to cooperate.

2.4 Improving Delivery Experience

By providing pain relief, delivery analgesia can improve the delivery experience of mothers, making them more positive and satisfied.

2.5 Reduce childbirth complications

During childbirth, excessive pain can lead to excessive physical tension in the mother, increasing the risk of childbirth complications. Labor analgesia can help reduce these risks.

2.6 Increasing the controllability of childbirth

Pain relief during childbirth can enable medical teams to better monitor the condition of the mother, helping to respond promptly to any abnormal situations.

2.7 Providing Safety

Labor analgesia is usually managed by professional anesthesiologists to ensure the correct use and dosage of medication. This helps ensure the safety of the delivery process.

3、 Will childbirth analgesia anesthesia make the mother "stupid"?

The anesthesia method for childbirth analgesia will not make the mother "stupid". The low concentration local anesthetics commonly used in spinal nerve block for labor analgesia mainly act on the peripheral nerves, block the transmission of pain stimuli to the central nervous system, and have no effect on the mother's brain, intelligence or cognitive ability. Therefore, the mother is conscious and can move freely, which can promote the progress of labor.

The goal of labor analgesia is to alleviate pain during childbirth while ensuring the safety and comfort of the mother. Mothers and medical teams usually discuss different pain relief options in detail before delivery in order to choose the most suitable method for the mother. The doctor will communicate fully with the mother, explaining the advantages and possible impacts of each method to ensure that the mother feels satisfied and at ease during delivery.

Overall, labor analgesia and anesthesia will not make the mother "stupid". But different anesthesia methods may produce different sensations and effects during childbirth. Doctors will choose appropriate pain relief methods based on the mother's condition and delivery progress, and provide detailed explanations and recommendations when needed to ensure the safety and health of both the mother and the baby. If there are any doubts or concerns, the mother should communicate fully with the medical team.
