Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune disease caused by impaired transmission at the neuromuscular junction, characterized clinically by symptoms such as ptosis, difficulty swallowing, and limb weakness. The causes of myasthenia gravis are complex and mainly include the following aspects.

Immune system abnormalities: Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune disease in which a special antibody targeting the postsynaptic membrane at the neuromuscular junction is produced in the patient's body, disrupting the postsynaptic membrane and blocking signal transmission at the neuromuscular junction, resulting in muscle weakness. Immune system abnormalities are one of the main causes of myasthenia gravis.

Genetic factors: Myasthenia gravis has a certain genetic predisposition, and individuals with myasthenia gravis in their families have a higher risk of developing the disease. Research has shown that there are some genetic differences between patients with myasthenia gravis and healthy individuals, indicating that genetic factors play an important role in the pathogenesis of myasthenia gravis.

Age factor: Myasthenia gravis is more common in children and adolescents, with a high incidence period of 1-5 years old. As patients age, their symptoms gradually alleviate. However, in some elderly people, the incidence rate of myasthenia gravis has also increased. This may be related to the decreased immune system function in elderly people.

Lifestyle habits: Poor lifestyle habits may also have an impact on the onset and condition of myasthenia gravis. For example, lack of exercise, prolonged staying up late, irregular diet, etc. can all lower the body's immune system, thereby increasing the risk of developing myasthenia gravis. Meanwhile, prolonged periods of intense work and study can also lead to abnormalities in the body's immune system, resulting in myasthenia gravis.

Drug therapy: Drug therapy is the first-line treatment for myasthenia gravis, mainly by regulating the signal transmission of the neuromuscular junction through drugs to improve the symptoms of muscle weakness. Commonly used drugs include cholinesterase inhibitors, immunosuppressants, immunomodulators, etc. Among them, cholinesterase inhibitors can increase the concentration of postsynaptic membrane acetylcholine and improve muscle weakness symptoms; Immunosuppressants alleviate the condition by suppressing abnormal immune responses and reducing the production of autoantibodies.

Immunotherapy: Immunotherapy is a method of treating the etiology of myasthenia gravis, mainly including immunoglobulin injection. Immunoglobulin injection can neutralize autoantibodies in the body and reduce abnormal attacks from the immune system.

Thymectomy: Thymectomy is a surgical treatment method mainly used to treat patients with myasthenia gravis accompanied by thymoma. Surgical removal of the thymus can eliminate immune cells that produce autoantibodies, thereby alleviating the condition. For patients with ineffective drug treatment or severe illness, thymectomy may be an effective treatment option.

Plasma exchange: By exchanging autoantibodies in the fluid, the level of antibodies in the body is reduced, alleviating abnormal attacks from the immune system. This method is usually used in cases of acute onset of myasthenia gravis or ineffective drug treatment.

During the treatment process, doctors will choose appropriate treatment methods based on the patient's specific situation to achieve the best treatment effect.
