Key Steps For Self Care In Dealing With Pneumothorax

2026-1-17

Pneumothorax is a pathological condition in which gas enters the pleural cavity and forms a gas accumulation. This condition is usually caused by lung disease or external factors, such as vigorous exercise, coughing, lifting heavy objects, weightlifting, straining to defecate, or blunt force injuries.

1、 Classification of Pneumothorax

Spontaneous pneumothorax usually occurs in young and middle-aged men or individuals with chronic bronchitis, emphysema, tuberculosis, and other diseases. It is an emergency in the field of pulmonary medicine, and if not treated in a timely manner, it may endanger life, but timely treatment can usually cure it.

Primary pneumothorax is a pneumothorax that occurs in healthy individuals whose lung routine X-ray examination fails to detect obvious lesions, especially in thin and long males. Smoking is the main pathogenic factor of primary pneumothorax.

Secondary pneumothorax is formed on the basis of other lung diseases. These diseases include chronic obstructive pulmonary emphysema, post inflammatory fibrotic lesions (such as silicosis, chronic pulmonary tuberculosis, diffuse pulmonary interstitial fibrosis, cystic pulmonary fibrosis, etc.). On the basis of these issues, bronchiolitis narrows, distorts, and forms pulmonary bullae.

There are also some special types of pneumothorax, including menstrual pneumothorax, pregnancy complicated pneumothorax, spontaneous pneumothorax in the elderly, and traumatic pneumothorax. Menstrual pneumothorax is related to the menstrual cycle, and pregnancy complicated pneumothorax mainly occurs in young women during the reproductive period. Spontaneous pneumothorax in the elderly is usually secondary to chronic lung disease, while traumatic pneumothorax is caused by external factors such as sharp or firearm injuries.

2、 How to deal with pneumothorax

The treatment methods for pneumothorax include conservative treatment, surgical treatment, and exhaust treatment.

Conservative treatment is suitable for small amounts of pneumothorax and closed pneumothorax with mild initial symptoms. The patient needs to strictly rest in bed, maintain a quiet environment, and closely monitor vital signs such as breathing, heart rate, and blood oxygen saturation. When necessary, high concentration oxygen therapy can be used to alleviate breathing difficulties.

Surgical treatment is an effective method for treating spontaneous pneumothorax. Among them, pleural adhesions surgery is used to prevent recurrence by introducing various chemical and biological agents into the pleural cavity, causing adhesions between the visceral and parietal layers of the pleura, eliminating the pleural space, and leaving no place for air to accumulate. However, the British Thoracic Society (BTS) guidelines suggest that chemical pleurodesis is only suitable for patients with persistent air leakage who are not suitable for surgical treatment and is not recommended as the preferred treatment method.

Video assisted thoracoscopic surgery is another effective treatment method. It can eliminate lung ruptures, treat primary lesions such as pulmonary bullae, bronchopleural fistula, tuberculosis perforation, etc., or ensure pleural fixation through surgery. Therefore, it is an effective method for treating refractory pneumothorax and the most effective measure for preventing recurrence.

Exhaust therapy is suitable for patients with significant respiratory distress and severe lung compression, especially those with tension pneumothorax who require emergency exhaust. Unstable hemodynamics suggest the possibility of tension pneumothorax, requiring immediate decompression through a second intercostal puncture of the midline of the clavicle, including pleural cavity aspiration and closed thoracic drainage.

3、 Self care methods for pneumothorax

Firstly, pneumothorax patients should rest absolutely in bed to fully absorb oxygen and minimize speech to reduce lung activity, which is beneficial for gas absorption and lung expansion. This is an important measure to alleviate symptoms of pneumothorax and promote recovery.

Secondly, some activities and habits in daily life also require special attention. Patients with pneumothorax need to rest in bed to avoid worsening the condition. During bed rest, it is advisable to engage in mild, low impact exercises such as walking to enhance physical fitness, but heavy physical labor such as lifting heavy objects should be avoided to prevent greater pressure on the lungs. In addition, try to avoid vigorous coughing, holding your breath, and other large movements as much as possible to prevent the aggravation of pneumothorax symptoms. At the same time, in order to prevent the recurrence of the disease, avoid stimulating activities such as running, cycling, and activities in high-altitude areas.

Thirdly, after the symptoms of pneumothorax disappear, patients can gradually return to normal daily life and work, but still need to pay attention to avoiding vigorous exercise and body collision movements to prevent the recurrence of pneumothorax. These activities can only be performed after imaging examination indicates complete disappearance of pneumothorax.

Finally, patients with pneumothorax should seek medical attention at the respiratory department 2-4 weeks after the initial onset, for a follow-up examination of pneumothorax absorption, to determine the presence of underlying lung disease, and whether further treatment is needed. If symptoms such as unilateral chest pain or difficulty breathing occur again, seek medical attention promptly to avoid delaying treatment.

In addition, there are some special precautions that patients need to pay special attention to. Before the pneumothorax is completely cured, heavy physical activity and flying should be avoided. At the same time, diving and other water activities are prohibited to avoid increasing lung pressure and worsening pneumothorax symptoms.

4、 How to prevent pneumothorax

1. Smoking is an important factor leading to pneumothorax. Long term smoking can seriously damage lung health and increase the risk of pneumothorax. Therefore, avoiding smoking is one of the key measures to prevent pneumothorax. This not only includes active smoking, but also avoiding inhaling secondhand smoke as much as possible. In smoking environments, it is advisable to choose smoke-free areas or use air purifiers to reduce the risk of inhaling secondhand smoke.

2. Proper exercise is also important for preventing pneumothorax. However, vigorous exercise may increase the pressure on the lungs, so it is recommended to choose a suitable exercise method for oneself. Light to moderate exercises such as walking, cycling, and jogging are usually suitable as they can enhance cardiovascular function, improve body resistance, and not cause excessive pressure on the lungs. However, it is also important to exercise in moderation and avoid overexertion and strenuous activities.

Maintaining healthy eating habits is also helpful in preventing pneumothorax. It is recommended to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables, which are rich in nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber, which can help enhance the body's resistance and prevent diseases. At the same time, attention should also be paid to controlling the intake of salt, oil and fat in the diet to reduce the incidence rate of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, so as to reduce the risk of pneumothorax.

In addition to the above measures, maintaining sufficient sleep, avoiding staying up late, and maintaining a good mindset can also help prevent the occurrence of pneumothorax. These lifestyle habits help maintain balance and stability within the body, enhance resistance, and better cope with various diseases and health issues.

If you experience physical discomfort symptoms such as chest tightness, chest pain, difficulty breathing, etc., it should be taken seriously and you should go to a regular hospital for examination and treatment as soon as possible. Pneumothorax is an emergency that, if not treated promptly, can be life-threatening.
